BACKGROUND
In 1994, the broadcasting industry in Singapore underwent a few
momentous changes. The national broadcaster, Singapore Broadcasting
Corporation was privatised and a new regulatory and licensing
authority, the Singapore Broadcasting Authority was established.
These changes were introduced with the
objective of developing Singapore into a broadcasting hub in the
region and encouraging more broadcasters to set up base in Singapore.
Since 1995, more than 10 new broadcasters have applied for broadcasting
licences from the Authority.
These rapid developments in the industry
have catalysed the formation of a new association of broadcasters
in Singapore, the Association of Broadcasters (Singapore) (ABS).
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of ABS include acting on matters of common interest
to members relating to broadcasting and to represent them in communications
with other bodies and the public. ABS also acts as an information
centre for members.
We hope that more members will join the
association. With the entry of more players in the industry in
Singapore and the development of technology resulting in new applications
which broadcasters can offer, the issues facing broadcasters will
be more complex. We welcome all fellow broadcasters to join us
in discussing and addressing these issues together. Please complete
the attached application form to join the ABS and send it to the
